Correct option (a) Statement I is true; Statement II is also true; Statement II is a correct explanation of Statement I.

Explanation:

Schottky defect arises, when an atom or ion is missing from its normal lattice site. To maintain neutrality of crystal equal number of opposite ions are also missing. Thus, the ionic solid [MX] having Schottky defect will have the same number of cations and anions.
