Statement II : Phosphorous has lower electronegativity than nitrogen.

The correct option (b) Statement I is true; Statement II is true; Statement II is not the correct explanation of Statement I.

Explanation:

Due to absence of d - orbital in nitrogen, it does not form pentahalides. Electronegativity of N is greater than phosphorus. Hence, statement I and statement II both are correct but statement II is not correct explanation of statement I.
