In the contact process for industrial manufacture of sulphuric acid, some amount of sulphuric acid is used as a starting material. Explain briefly. What is the catalyst used in the oxidation of SO2?

In SO3 + H2O → H2SO4 reaction, H2SO4 is obtained in misty form and reaction is explosive (highly exothermic). By adding H2SO4 the above reaction is prevented.

The catalyst used is V2O5 and K2O is used as promoter for the oxidation of SO2 into SO3.
