Copper crystallises in face-centred cubic lattice and has a density of 8.930 g mol-3 at 293 K. Calculate the edge length of unit cell. [At. mass of Cu = 63.5 a.m.u, Avogadro's constant NA = 6.02 x 1023].

Best answer

Density = Mass of unit cell/Volume of unit cell

8.93 = (4 x 63.5)/(a3 x 6.02 x 1023).

a3 = 47.24 x 10-24

a = 3.6 x 10-8 cm. = 360 pm.
