The steps, in one of the possible reaction mechanisms, corresponding to the preparation of acetone from isopropyl alcohol by using CrO3 and conc. H2SO4 are mentioned below.

Step1: CH3CH(OH)CH3 + H2CrO----------> X + Y

Step 2: X + H2O  ----------> Acetone + Z + Q (Cr containing species)

Step 3: Q + H+ ---------> E+ F + H2O

Here Z is H3O+, E and F are Cr-containing species, and step 3 is a disproportionation reaction. Then, the correct statements are:

(1) In Step 2, water acts as an acid.

(2) Y=H2O and X contains chromium in oxidation state +6.

(3) Oxidation states of chromium in E and F are +6 and +3.

(4) Oxidation state of chromium in compound Q is +4.

Step-1

Step-2

Step-3

(1) In Step-2 water act as a base.

(2) Yes - Y = H2O and x contain Cr in oxidation state +6

(3) Oxidation state of Cr in E and F are +6 and +3 respectively

(4) Oxidation state of chromium in compound Q is +4

Hence, option (2), (3) and (4) are correct statement.
