A train weighing 1000 metric ton is moving up an inclined plane rising 1 in 200 at a uniform speed of 54 km hr-1. The frictional resistance is 0.4 kg per metric ton. What is the power of the engine? [Use g = 10 ms-2]

Best answer

We have m = 1000 metric ton = 106 kg

Frictional resistance = 0.4 kg / metric ton.

∴ Total frictional force Ffr = 1000 × 0.4 = 400 kg wt

= 400 × gN = 4000 N

Gravitational force down the plane = mg sinθ

Net opposing force = Ffr + mg sin θ

= 4000 + 50000 = 54000 N

The power of the engine = P = F.v. = 54000 × 25 W

= 810 kW
