Energy levels A, B, C of a certain atom corresponding values of energy i.e. EA < EB < EC If λ1, λ2, λ3 are wave lengths of radiation corresponding to the transition C → B, B → A and C → A. which of the following is correct

(A) λ32 = λ12 + λ22

(B) λ3 = λ1 + λ2

(C) λ3 = [(λ1λ2) / (λ1 + λ2)]

(D) λ1 + λ2 + λ3 = 0

Best answer

The correct option is (C) λ3 = [(λ1λ2) / (λ1 + λ2)].

Explanation:

From diagram,

Sum of energies for transitions C to B and B to A is equal to energy for transition from C to A.

Energies and frequency are additive whereas wavelength is inversely proportional to frequency
