Election Commission of India : Independent and an autonomous body under the constitution of India.

Election Commission of India is an autonomous and independent body under the constitution of India that was established in the year 1950. The major roles and responsibilities of the election commission of India are to conduct free and fair elections in the country and to implement the values of democracy and secularism in the society.

There are various milestones that the Election Commission of India has brought about in its 70 years of existence in the country. Some of the notable achievements of the ECI is the introduction of an electronic voting machine in the 2004 Lok Sabha elections. Another laudable achievement by the ECI is the introduction of voter ID for the people of the country. Introduction of nota in 2014 is another example of how efficiently ECI works on its own. Robust and bold implementation of model code of conduct during the Lok Sabha elections of 2009 was another milestone to remember.

India is the largest democracy in the world and most of the credit for it goes to independent bodies in India such as election commission which are not influenced by any government or political ideologies. Although, in recent years there has been criticism that the ECI has come under the influence of certain sections of society and political ideologies which is a dangerous precedence for the democratic fabric of the country.
