The quantum numbers are those numbers through which the position of electrons and their respective energies in various shells, sub-shells or orbitals are known.

There are four quantum numbers which are given below:

Principal Quantum Number :

This quantum number indicates orbit number of an electron and its energy. Also, it is represented by n, where n is integer.

Angular Momentum (Azimuthal) Quantum Number :

This quantum number represents the angular momentum of the revolving electron and is indicated by l has all the values from 0 to (n-1)

e.g. if n = 4, then l = 0, 1, 2, 3 etc.

Magnetic Quantum Number :

This quantum number indicates the direction of an orbit in space in a magnetic fie l It is represented by m. Its values are from - l to + l including zero.

eg. n = 4 l = (0,1,2,3) and m = (-3-2-10,1,2,3)

Spin Quantum Number :

This quantum number represents spin of the electron.

It has been observed that electrons have two types of spine,

i.e. clockwise \((+\frac{1}{2})\) and anti-clockwise \((-\frac{1}{2}).\)
