Unhindered alkyllithium compounds form hexameric aggregates in hydrocarbon solvents, but when the alkyl group has a branching point at the α- or β-carbon then the aggregates are tetrameric. The degree of association is also influenced by the nature of the solvent, the solution concentration, and temperature.
