Uses of Proteins :
(i) Proteins are used as food.
(ii) Some proteins (e.g. insulin) act as hormones.
(iii) Some proteins (enzymes) function as catalysts for biological reactions.
(iv) Some proteins function as biological structural materials, viz. keratin in hair.
(v) Haemoglobin (a protein) acts as oxygen-carrier in mammals.
(vi) Some blood proteins function to form antibodies which provide resistance to diseases.
(vii) Nucleoproteins form the important constituents of the genes that supply and transmit genetic messages in cell divisions.
(viii) Certain proteins are used in industries, like textile, plastic and paper.
