Best answer

(c) Both

Clemmensen Reduction

In this method, the reduction is carried out with Zinc amalgam and conc. Hydrochloric acid.

This method is also used for the reduction of aldehydes and ketones to their corresponding alkanes which are sensitive to alkalis.

This reaction is complimentary to Wolf kishner reduction which is carried out in strong basic mediums.

The mechanism of Clemmensen reduction occurs via a carbocationic intermediate.

Clemmensen Reduction

Wolf Kishner Reaction

In this method, the reduction is carried out with hydrazine and KOH.

This method is also used for the reduction of aldehydes and ketones which are sensitive to acids.

This reaction is complimentary to Clemmensen reduction which is carried out in strong acid mediums.

This reaction is good for acid-sensitive substrates.

However, substrates with bulky groups and sterically hindered carbonyls do not give good results.
