Best answer

Unlike alcohols, phenols give characteristic colour with neutral ferric chloride solution.

The characteristic colour is believed to be due to the formation of coloured co-ordination compounds in which iron is hexavalent. Reaction of phenols with ferric chloride is used in analytical chemistry for distinguishing phenols from carboxylic acids.
