How will you distinguish between:

(1)  Ethene and ethyne. 

(2)  Methanal and Ethanol.

(i)  Add ammoniacal solution of AgNO3 to both the gases. The one which gives a white precipitate with the solution, is ethyne and the one which does not give any precipitate, is ethane.

(ii)  Methanal gives silver mirror with Tollen’s reagent while ethanol does not give.
