Using the Pythagorean Triples formula:

a2 + b2 = c2

Replacing a by x, b by 40, and c by 41 in the formula we have,

⇒ x2 + 402 = 412

⇒ x2 + 1,600 = 1,681

⇒ x2 = 1,681 - 1,600 = 81

⇒ x = √81 = 9
