(i) When a circular shaft is subjected to torsion, show that the shear stress varies

linearly from the axis to the surface.

(ii) Prove that the torque transmitted by a solid shaft when subjected to torsion is

given by.   \(Torque transmitted/polar moment = max.shear stress/radius of shaft = ( modulus of rigidity x angle of twist)/ length of shaft\)

where

T = Torque transmitted, J = Polar moment of inertia, τ = Max. shear stress,

R = Radius of the shaft, C = Modulus rigidity, θ = Angle of twist, and L =length of shaft
