Green Revolution has caused the total yield of food crops to increase five fold since 1950. Green Revolution involves the increased use of fertilisers, irrigation and high-yielding varieties (HYV) of rice, wheat and maize. These varieties produce bumper harvests and in some cases mature faster, enabling the farmer to grow two or more crops in a year.

Prof. M. S. Swaminathan, recipient of the World Food Prize, and the American agronomist Norman Borlaug, are the architects of the Green Revolution in India.
