Electrostatic Precipitator (ESP)

  • It is an electrical device that removes more than 99 per cent particulate matter present in the industrial exhaust from a thermal power plant.
  • ESP has electrode wires and a stage of collecting plates. l Electrode wires are given an electric current of several thousand volts, which produces a corona that releases electrons.
  • These electrons attach to dust particles and give them a negative charge within a very small fraction of a second.
  • Collecting plates are earthed that attract charged dust particles.
