Best answer

A molecule possess an n-fold alternating axis of symmetry if when rotated through an angle of 360º/n about this axis and then followed by reflection in plane perpendicular to the axis; the molecule is indistinguishable from the original molecule.

It is also called Improper axis of symmetry.

Note: S1 is the same as the plane of symmetry and S2 is same as the centre of symmetry.
