Two moles of KI react with on mole of HgI2 to form one mole of the complex K2[HgI4].

2KI + HgI2 ⇌ K2[HgI4]

In aqueous solution, one mole of the complex K2[HgI4] dissociates to give 3 moles of ions.

K2HgI4 ⇌ 2K+[HgI4]2−

Van't Hoff factor i = \(\mathrm{\frac{n(observed)}{n(theoretical)}} = \frac 3 1 = 3\)

Thus, Van't Hoff factor of a mixture of two moles of KI with 1 mole HgI2 in a solution of water is 3.
