The opening lines of the Hindi Song are “Aye Mere Waten Ke Logon, Turn Khub Logo Nara: Ye Shubh Din Hai Hum Sab Ka Lehralo Tiranga Pyara, Par Mat Bhulo Seema Par Veron Ne Hain Pran Gawayen.” It was sung by Lata Mangeskar. Yes, the Indian princes were short-sighted in their approach to the events of 1757.

2. How did the East India Company subdue the Indian princes?

Solution:

The Indian princes were constantly at war with each other. They called the English merchants to help them in their fights. The people had no peace due to such constant fights. The rivalries helped the East India Company subdue the Indian princes one by one.

3. Quote the words used by Ram Mohan Roy to say that every religion teaches the same principles.

Solution:

According to Ram Mohan Roy, “Cows are of different colours, but the colour of their milk is the same. Different teachers have different opinions, but the essence of every religion is the same.”

4. In what ways did the British officers exploit Indians?

Solution:

(i) Untouchability and child marriage

(ii)The British decided to do away with import duty on goods manufactured in England. This severely affected Indian industries.
In 1818, they passed Regulation III. Under it, an Indian could be jailed without trial in a court.

(iii)They lost their old jobs and lands. They were being converted by the British.

(iv) Four reasons for the discontent that led to the 1857 War of Independence were:
Indians had become slaves in their own country.

  • The East India Company destroyed Indian industries.
  • There was huge difference in the treatment of the English men and the Indians.
  • The use of grease on the bullet was spoiling the customs of Indians as it was made of the fat of the cows and pigs.

Speaking and Writing

Playact the role of farmers who have grievances against the policies of the government. Rewrite their ‘speech bubbles’ in dialogue form first.

Dialogue between farmers and government representative :

Farmers : Dear Government Authorities, today we are here to tell you about our grievances as well as our proposal to make things better at our end

Governemnt : Ok go ahead, hopefully we shall come to an agreement

Farmers : We feel neglected and we dont earn much profit becasue of middle man profit, high cost of fertilizers, no incentive scheme for farmers

Government : Ok and whats your demands then?

Farmers : In order to motivate farmers and boost production, the government should take following initiatives; Cut down the middle distributor and provide a direct sale from farmers to government to give farmers the maximum price for their crops. Subsidise the value of fertilisers to farmers Give bonuses to farmers that yield highest production from their farms

Government : Ok, let us give some time and we shall meet after two weeks and solve your concerns

Once a fox fell into a well accidentally. She thought how to get out of the well. A goat arrived there by chance. She looked into the well. She asked the fox if the water was sweet. The cunning fox played a trick. She told a lie that the water was very, very sweet, and she had had enough of it. The foolish goat also wanted to taste the water. The fox invited her into the well. The goat reached there soon. Now the fox rode on the goat’s back and climbed out of the well. Then she thanked the goat for help. The goat was reminded of her mother’s words that she must never go by the advice of a stranger.
