Difference between transition state and intermediate.

A transition state refers to an imaginary state and cannot be isolated. On the other hand, an intermediate is a stable real species and can be isolated under appropriate conditions. The three important reaction intermediates so far we have come across are free radicals, carbonium ions (carbocations) and carbanions.
