Equal weights of ethane and hydrogen are mixed in an empty container at 25°C. Determine the fraction of the total pressure exerted by hydrogen.

Let the wt. of ethane and H2 = w gm

No. of moles of C2H= \(\frac w{30}\)

No. of moles of H2 = \(\frac w2\)

Total no. of moles = \(\frac w{30} + \frac w2 = \frac{16w}{30}\)

Mole fraction of \(H_{2} = \frac{w}2\times \frac{30}{16w} = 15/16\)
