"If dependent variable (y) and its derivative (differential coefficient) both are of first degree, then differential equation is of first order."

General form of first order differential equation

\(\frac{dy}{dx}\) + Py = Q ...(1)

where P and Q are constants or functions of x.

For example:

etc. are linear equations.

Remark: Second form of first order linear equation is \(\frac{dy}{dx}\) + P1x = Q1 where P1 and Q1 are either constant or functions of y.
