Yes, Peshwa Baji Rao I, who was the leader of the Maratha Empire in the early 18th century, sent Dattaji Shinde (also known as Dattaji Rao Shinde) to the north in 1737. The purpose of this military campaign was to strengthen the Maratha presence in northern India and to assert control over regions in present-day Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan.

Dattaji Shinde was a trusted general and played a key role in expanding Maratha influence beyond the Deccan Plateau. He was sent to the northern regions to help establish Maratha supremacy in those areas, especially to protect the interests of the Maratha Empire against the growing power of the Mughal Empire and other regional rulers.

However, during his campaign in the north, Dattaji Shinde faced significant challenges, including fierce opposition from the Mughal forces. In 1737, Dattaji Shinde tragically died in the Battle of Kunjpur, which marked a setback for the Marathas in their northern expansion. Despite his death, his efforts and sacrifices contributed to the broader efforts of the Maratha Empire to exert influence in northern India.
