The following is the description of the caste system in India given by Al-Biruni:
• Al-Biruni was influenced by the way the class of Brahmins thought about the caste system in India. Thus, his description of the caste system in India was based on a hierarchy created by the Brahmins themselves.
• Other than the four varnas that constituted the caste system in India, he also enumerated in his account the ones that were left out from this system. These people were known as 'Antyaja'.
• In Al-Biruni's belief, the caste system that was prevalent in India was not rigid and was based on mere preachings given by a certain class of people.
