Carbohydrates are defined as optically active polyhydroxy aldehydes or polyhydroxy ketone substances which give these on hydrolysis. 

These are broadly classified as: 

(i) Monosaccharides. 

(ii) Oligosaccharides. 

(iii) Polysaccharides
