The selectable marker genes in a cloning vector allow for the selection and identification of bacteria that have been transformed with a recombinant plasmid compared to nontransformed cells. Some of the most common selectable markers are genes for ampicillin resistance (ampR) and tetracycline resistance (tetR ) and the lacZ gene used for blue white selection.
