A brass bar of 40 mm diameter is completely encased in a steel tube of outside diameter 60mm so as to make a composite bar of length 400mm. Assembly is subjected to a compressive load such that the stress developed in brass bar is 50MPa. How much compressive load is applied on the composite bar? What is the stress developed in the steel tube? Given Es = 2Eb = 210GPa. What is the change in length of the composite bar?

Diameter of the brass bar,

d = 40 mm

Outside diameter of the steel tube,

D = 60 mm
