A weight of 250kN is supported by a short concrete column of 25cm × 25cm in section strengthened by four steel bars near the corners of the cross-section. The diameter of each steel bar is 30 mm. Find the stresses in the steel and the concrete.

Es = 15 Ec = 210 GPa.

If the stress in the concrete is not to exceed 2.1N/mm2, what area of the steel bar is required in order that the column may support a load of 350kN?

Best answer

Load, W = 250kN

Area of cross-section = 25 cm × 25 cm = 625 cm2 = 62,500 mm2

Diameter of steel bars,

d = 30 mm
