There is no ring strain in cyclohexane, but cyclobutane has an angle strain of 9º 44’. If ∆HCº of cyclohexane per (CH2) group is 660kJ mol/L and ∆HCº of cyclobutane is 2744 kJ mol/L, what is the ring strain in kJ mol/L of cyclobutane?

(A) –104 (B) 104 (C) –2084 (D) 2084

Best answer

Correct option  (B) 104

Explanation:

Ring strain = (∆Hc° of cyclobutane − 4 x ∆HC°  of per (CH2) group of cyclohexane).

 = 2744 -(4 x 660) = 104 kJ mol-1
