The internal energy is the total energy contained by a thermodynamics system. It is the energy needed to create the system but excludes the energy due to external force fields. E.g. Kinetic, energy if the sample is moving or potential energy if the sample is at a height from the ground. Internal energy has two major components i.e. kinetic and internal potential energy.
