The electric field inside a hallow conductor is zero. Therefore, if an object located inside a hollow conductor is subjected to electric field, there is no effect of electric field on the object. Thus the hallow conductor shields the object from the external electric field. This is called electrostatic shielding.
Its practical application is to shield the wire carrying audio signal from the external electric field, such as that due to atmospheric electricity or due to electric sparks.
