The information signal to be transmitted is first converted to digital format using Analog to Digital converter, which is compatible with the communication medium.
These digital pulses are then fed to a optical fibre cable which can transmit them over long distances. At the receiving end, a light sensitive device like a photocell is used to detect light pulses. It converts light into an electrical signal.
The receiver circuit processes the electrical signal to recover the original information.
