What makes a glass different from a solid such as quartz? Under what conditions could quartz be converted into glass?

Glass is an amorphous solid while quartz is crystalline solid. Glass has short range order while quartz has long rage order. On melting quartz and then cooling it rapidly, it is converted into glass.
