There was the distribution due to language and religion. The major social groups are the Sinhala - speakers 74% of the population and 18%of the population are the Tamil speakers. The Tamils also have sub - groups.
The Tamil natives of the country are called 'Sri Lankan Tamils '( 13%).The rest, whose forefathers came from India as plantation workers during colonial period, are called 'Indian Tamils'.
Most of Tamils are Hindus and Muslims. Most of Sinhala speakers are Buddhists. There are about 7 % Christians, who are both Tamil and Sinhala.
