Irrational beliefs can be termed as superstitions. In ancient times when people did not know the cause of a particular disease, they ascribed it to some evil spirit or witchcraft. There is a superstition mentioned in the story that dead men use a particular path. It is the path through which their dead ancestors visit them. It is the path of children yet to be born. And that they become angry if it is closed. A young woman died during childbirth but the villagers thought that their ancestors were angry because their path had been closed. Even today we have a number of superstitions in our society. For example, one defers one’s journey if a cat passes across one’s path.
तर्करहित विश्वासों को अन्धविश्वास कहा जा सकता है। प्राचीन काल में जब लोग किसी बीमारी के होने का कारण नहीं जानते थे तो वे इसकी जिम्मेदारी किसी दुरात्मा अथवा जादू पर डाल देते थे। कहानी में वर्णित यह एक अन्धविश्वास है कि मृत लोग एक खास रास्ते का प्रयोग करते हैं। इसी रास्ते से उनके पूर्वज उनसे मिलने आते हैं। यह उनके जन्म लेने वाले बच्चों के आने का मार्ग है। और यह कि यदि रास्ता बन्द कर दिया तो वे नाराज हो जाते हैं। एक युवती प्रसव के दौरान मर गई। किन्तु गाँव वालों ने सोचा कि उनके पूर्वज नाराज हो गये हैं क्योंकि उनका मार्ग बन्द कर दिया गया था। आज भी हमारे समाज में बहुत-से अन्धविश्वास हैं। उदाहरण के लिए, यदि बिल्ली रास्ता काट जाये तो लोग यात्रा स्थगित कर देते हैं।
