A few pigeons were cooing on the roof. When Franz heard them cooing, it occurred to him whether the German soldiers would force even pigeons to speak German. It was as if they were trying to achieve the impossible. Franz was of the opinion that nobody is powerful enough to replace a language which people of a particular place speak, simply by imposing another language in schools. Just as birds speak the language of their own, people speak their mother tongue. A language is something that comes naturally to people. Nobody should be allowed to force anyone to change his or her mother tongue. Such an attempt would always be futile. Just as pigeons can’t be made to change their language, nobody can be forced to change their language.
कुछ कबूतर छत पर गुटरगूं कर रहे थे। जब फ्रेन्ज ने उन्हें गुटरगूं करते हुए सुना तो उसके दिमाग में आया कि क्या जर्मन सैनिक कबूतरों से भी जर्मन भाषा बुलवायेंगे। यह असम्भव को प्राप्त करने जैसी बात थी। फ्रेन्ज का विचार था कि कोई भी इतना शक्तिशाली नहीं हो सकता कि लोगों द्वारा बोली जाने वाली भाषा को विद्यालयों में अन्य भाषा लगाकर प्रतिस्थापित कर दे। जिस तरह पक्षी अपनी भाषा में बोलते हैं, लोग उसी तरह अपनी मातृभाषा में बोलते हैं। एक भाषा वह होती है। जिसे लोग स्वाभाविक रूप से बोलते हैं। किसी को भी किसी की मातृभाषा बदलवाने के लिए दबाव नहीं डालना चाहिए। ऐसी कोई भी कोशिश सदैव व्यर्थ जाएगी। जिस तरह कबूतरों की भाषा नहीं बदलवाई जा सकती है, उसी प्रकार किसी को भी उसकी भाषा बदलने को मजबूर नहीं किया जा सकता है।
