The first sentence of the story is: ‘When Tao Ying rides on the bus alone, quite often she does not bother to buy a ticket.’ This sentence is very significant because the entire story revolves round a ticket – The title of the story ‘One Centimetre’ is also related to the same issue. The children up to 1.10 m are exempted from buying a ticket. The protagonist Tao Ying’s son Xiao Ye is 1 cm shorter than the limit. The next episode occurs at the temple when due to erroneous scale she was not allowed to enter the temple without one more ticket. Hence the first sentence of the story and the entire theme of the story are interwoven. The first sentence is the soul of the story.
कहानी का प्रथम वाक्य है : ‘जब कभी टाओ यिंग बस में अकेली सवार होती है तो वह अधिकांशतः टिकिट खरीदने की परवाह नहीं करती है।’ यह वाक्य कहानी (कथानक) के लिये बहुत महत्वपूर्ण है क्योंकि सम्पूर्ण कहानी एक टिकिट के इर्द-गिर्द घूमती है। कहानी का शीर्षक ‘एक सेंटीमीटर’ भी इसी विषय से जुड़ा हुआ है। 1.10 मीटर तक ऊँचाई के बच्चों को टिकिट से छूट है। कहानी की मुख्य पात्र टाओ यिंग का बेटा इस सीमा से 1 सेंटीमीटर छोटा है। अगली घटना मन्दिर पर होती है जब मन्दिर के त्रुटिपूर्ण पैमाने के कारण उसे बिना एक और टिकिट के अन्दर प्रवेश नहीं दिया गया। अतः कहानी का प्रथम वाक्य और सम्पूर्ण कथानक (कहानी) एक दूसरे में गुंथे हुए हैं। प्रथम वाक्य कहानी की आत्मा है।
