On world level, on the basis of carbon quantity, coal is of four types: 

1. Anthracite – Carbon quantity 80 to 90% . 

2. Bituminous – Carbon quantity 75 to 80%.

3. Lignite – Carbon quantity upto 50%. 

4. Peat – Carbon quantity less than 50%.
