Literature expresses truth but that is written in the beautiful manner. The second quality is suggestiveness. It appeals to the emotions and imaginations of the reader. Literature takes the reader in a world where the reader feels satisfied. The third quality of literature is permanence. Literature keeps the record of the ideals permanently. Whatever is written that is permanent and remains for a long time.
निबन्ध लेखक अपने निबन्ध में साहित्य के तीन मुख्य गुणों के बारे में चर्चा करता है। प्रथम तो कलात्मक गुण है। इस गुण में सत्यता और सुन्दरता को प्रतिबिम्बित किया जाता है। साहित्य सत्य को बताता है परन्तु यह सुन्दर तरीके से लिखा जाता है। दूसरा गुण विचारोत्तेजकवादिता का है। यह भावनाओं और कल्पनाओं को जागृत करती है। साहित्य पाठक को ऐसे संसार में ले जाता है जहाँ वह संतुष्ट महसूस करता है। साहित्य का तीसरा गुण स्थायित्व है। साहित्य विचारों का लेखा-जोखा स्थायी रूप से रखता है। जो कुछ लिखा गया है वह स्थायी होता है और लम्बे समय तक विद्यमान रहता है।
