Jambaji’s message of humanity and respect for all living things was readily accepted his followers. His followers were called Bishnois. They were also called ‘twenty-niners’. They were called so because they followed the twenty nine basic principles laid down by their religious head, Jambaji. The main two commandments of his message were never to cut any green tree and never to hunt or kill any wild animal. Bishnois have continued with their magnificent obsession for more than five centuries. They have contributed a lot in safeguarding the trees and animals in Rajasthan, Haryana and Madhya Pradesh. Even today one can distinguish a Bishnoi village in the desert by the grove of khejdi, ber, ker and sangri trees.
जंबाजी के मानवता तथा सभी जीवों के सम्मान करने के संदेश को उनके अनुयायियों के द्वारा सहर्ष स्वीकार किया गया। उनके अनुयायी बिश्नोई कहलाए। उन्हें ‘twenty-niners’ कहा गया। इन्हें ऐसा इसलिए कहा गया, क्योंकि वे अपने धार्मिक प्रभुत्व द्वारा प्रदत्त 29 मूलभूत सिद्धांतों का अनुसरण करते थे। उनके दो प्रमुख धर्मादेश थे—कभी भी किसी हरे वृक्ष को नहीं काटना तथा कभी भी किसी जंगली जीव की हत्या नहीं करना। बिश्नोइयों ने इन सिद्धांतों को पाँच शताब्दियों से भी अधिक समय तक पालन किया। उन्होंने राजस्थान, हरियाणा तथा मध्य प्रदेश में वृक्षों तथा जंतुओं की रक्षा में महत्वपूर्ण योगदान दिया। आज भी रेगिस्तान में स्थित बिश्नोई गाँव को खेजड़ी, बेर तथा सांगरी वृक्षों के बगीचों से पहचाना जा सकता है।
