Appiko movement was an important movement which started for environmental conservation in the state of Karnataka. Appiko means to “Embrace/Fill in Arms”. This movement started when excessive cutting and felling of trees occurred in the Salkani areas of district Sirsi of Karnataka state in September 1983. The men, women and children started hugging the trees to prevent people from cutting them down and forced them to run away they guarded the trees for weeks and they prevented thousands of trees from being cut down.
