Out of benzene, m – dinitrobenzene and toluene which will undergo nitration most easily and why?

CH3 group is an electron-donating group, while -NO2 group is electron withdrawing group. Therefore, maximum electron density will be there in toluene, followed by benzene and it is least in pndinitrobenzene. 

Therefore, the ease of nitration decreases in the order: 

Toluene > benzene > m – dinitrobenzene.
