सिद्ध कीजिए की सरल रेखायें जिनके दिक् कोज्यायें `al+bm+cn=0` तथा `fmn+gnl+hlm` द्वारा दी गयी है तो ये रेखायें एक-दूसरे के लंबवत होंगी यदि `(f)/(a)+(g)/(b)+(h)/(c)=0` और समान्तर होंगी यदि `a^(2)f^(2)+b^(2)g^(2)+c^(2)h^(2)-2bcgh-2cahf-2abfg=0`

समीकरण `al+mb+cn=0 " "....(1)`
`fmn+gnl+hlm=0" "...(2)`
समीकरण (1) से
`n=(-(al+bm))/(c)`
समीकरण (2) में यह मान रखने पर
`fm{(-(al+bm))/(c)}+gl{(-(al+bm))/(c)}+hml=0`
`rArr agl^(2)+(af+bg-ch)lm+bfm^(2)=0`
`rArr ag((l)/(m))^(2)+(af+bg-ch)*((l)/(m))+bf=0`
जो `((l)/(m))` में द्विघात है इसलिए इसके दो मूल `((l_(1))/(m_(1)))` तथा `((i_(2))/(m_(2)))` होंगे
तथा `(l_(1))/(m_(1))xx(l_(2))/(m_(2))=(bf)/(ag)`
`rArr (l_(1)l_(2))/(bf)=(m_(1)m_(2))/(ag)`
`rArr (l_(1)l_(2))/(((f)/(a)))=(m_(1)m_(2))/(((g)/(b)))=(n_(1)n_(2))/(((h)/(c)))=lambda` सममित गुण से
दी गयी रेखायें परस्पर लंबवत होंगी यदि
`rArr l_(1)l_(2)+m_(1)m_(2)+n_(1)n_(2)=0`
`rArr lambda((f)/(a)+(g)/(b)+(h)/(c))=0`
`rArr (f)/(a)+(g)/(b)+(h)/(c)=0`
दी गयी रेखायें समान्तर होंगी यदि मूल समान हो, तो
`(af+bg-ch)^(2)-4abgf=0`
`rArr a^(2)f^(2)+b^(2)g^(2)+c^(2)h^(2)-2bcgh-2cahf-2abfg=0`
