Given:

In an election, 11% of the total votes were declared invalid. 

The winner got 49.5% of the total valid votes. 

Difference of the votes is 5000 

Calculations:

Let the number of total votes be 100x 

Total invalid votes = 11% of 100x   (given)

⇒ 11x 

Total valid votes = 100x - 11x 

⇒ 89x 

According to the question winner got 49.5% of the total votes 

Winners total votes = 49.5x

So loser total votes = 89x - 49.5x = 39.5x

According to the question 

49.5x - 39.5x = 5000

⇒ 10x = 5000 

⇒ x = 500 

Total voters = 100x 

⇒ 500 × 100 

⇒ 50000 

∴ Total voters were 50000.
