About General Pran Nath Thapar: 

  • General Pran Nath Thapar was born on 23rd May 1906 at Lahore(now in Pakistan) into a prominent Punjabi family. He was the youngest son of his father Diwan Bahadur Kunj Behari Thapar.
  • He was the Fourth(4th) Chief of Army Staff of the Indian Army. After completed his graduation from Government College(Lahore), he completed his training from the Royal Military College(Sandhurst), where he commissioned in February 1926 as a Second lieutenant.
  • General P.N Thapar posted with the 2nd battalion of Punjab Regiment. He served during the Second World War in Burma 1941 and later in the Middle East countries and some parts of Italy.
  • He appointed as The Chief of Army Staff of the Indian Army on 8 May 1961 and incumbent until 19 November 1962. Unfortunately, he resigned from the Chief of the Army Staff post after the defeat by China in the Indo-Sino War.

Notes:

  • The Defence Minister of India at the time of Indo-Sino(1962) war was Mr V.K.Krishna Menon. He was the 5th Defence Minister of India.
  • The current Chief of the Army Staff of the Indian Army is Mr Manoj Mukund Narwane. He is 28th Serving Chief of the Indian Army.
