Consider the following statements for Norton’s theorem:

1. Short the branch resistance through which current is to be calculated.

2. Obtain the current through this short-circuited branch, using any of the network simplification techniques.

3. Develop Norton’s equivalent circuit by connecting current source IN with the resistance RN in series with it

Which of the above statements are correct?

1. 1, 2 and 3
2. 1 and 3 only

Correct Answer - Option 3 : 1 and 2 only
  • Any linear bilateral network can be represented as a current source IN and resistance RN in parallel with it.
  • Norton’s current is nothing but the short circuit current across the load I.e. short the branch resistance through which current is to be calculated.
  • We can obtain the current through this short-circuited branch, using any of the network simplification techniques.
  • Norton’s resistance is the equivalent resistance across the load after removing all the independent sources, i.e. short circuit the voltage source and open circuit the current source.
