In order to avoid unnecessary psychological problems arising out of annual examination system we should use:
1. periodical tests only

Measurement, assessment, and evaluation are integral parts of the teaching-learning process. A teacher is directly involved in the assessment and evaluation of the achievement of a learner. Achievement refers to what a person has acquired or achieved after the specific training or instruction has been imparted. Thus, to measure what a pupil has learned, achievement tests or examinations are used.

Year-End or Annual Examination:

  • Though the formative assessment strategies are getting more popular in the constructivist approach to teaching, still there is the need for term-end examination, not only to grade learners but also to get terminal feedback about the learners’ performance in different aspects. It is not possible to assess every aspect of learners’ scholastic and co-scholastic attainment through formative evaluation.
  • Therefore, there is a need to use summative assessments like the term-end examination.
  • The term-end examination is usually conducted at the end of a term, say after completion of a semester, annually, or at the end of the entire course.
  • It carries, says 60 or 70 percent of the total weightage given to the assessment and evaluation in a course, and the rest weightage is given to continuous assessment (formative evaluation).
  • Generally, term-end examination is conducted either through written or oral examination at the end of the semester or at the end of the year. In many cases, both the components of written as well as oral examination are also used in the term-end examination.
  • The term-end examination helps to obtain terminal feedback and to certify learners. 

  • Periodical, Unit-based and Internal tests are conducted to measure their consistent performance throughout the year. It is justifiable to cover all oral, written performances by giving multiple opportunities.
  • It is helpful in providing suggestive measures and feedback to the learner about his performace.

Hence, we can conclude that in order to avoid unnecessary psychological problems arising out of the annual examination system we should use periodical tests with corrective measures.
