Correct Answer - Option 4 : 4/5

Given:

In a carton, there are total of 45 oranges.

One-fifth of the total oranges are rotten.

Concepts used:

Number of non-rotten oranges = Total number of oranges – number of rotten oranges

Calculation:

One-fifth of the total oranges are rotten. Total oranges are equal to 45.

⇒ Number of rotten oranges = (1/5) × 45 = 9

⇒ Number of non-rotten oranges = 45 – 9 = 36

⇒ Probability that an orange drawn randomly is non-rotten = 36/45 = 4/5

∴ Probability that an orange drawn randomly is not defective is 4/5.

Alternative solution:

One-fifth of total oranges are rotten.

⇒ Fraction of non-rotten oranges = (1 - 1/5) = 4/5

∴ Probability that an orange drawn randomly is not defective is 4/5.
